Elasticity of elasticity prevents injury

Researchers at the University of Hertfordshire have discovered an elastic, hard, soft medium. Called d3o, the material is particularly useful in injury prevention.

Under normal conditions, molecules of d3o move slowly, making the material very flexible. However, when compressed by a collision, its molecules lock together. Thus, the material hardens, propagating the force acting on a larger area.

Recognizing the benefits, the Swiss company Ribcap is using the d30 to produce a head cap for snow sports. Normally, the hat is soft, elastic when the team is on top. When a team member has a head-on collision, such as a fall, the helmet will harden like a normal helmet.

Named after Ribcap, this type of cap is the product after five years of research and development. According to Ruth Gough, Brand Manager, Ripcap creates comfort and comfort for the team, making it easy for them to forget that they have a hat on their head. Ribcap also uses d3o material to produce knee pads, elbows, shoulders, and hips.
