In terms of 'trickery' in flirting, Calypte costae must be ranked at the top.

Costa hummingbird also has the scientific name Calypte costae . You can find this tiny bird in the southwestern United States and Mexico's Baja California peninsula. Although very small in size but in terms of 'trickery' in flirting, Calypte costae must be ranked at the top of the animal world!

Accordingly, when it comes to breeding season, the males will show off their flying ability to flirt with the female, in particular they will soar and then make a dive down near the ground.

According to scientists' research, the attractiveness of an empty Costa hummingbird will be evaluated by the female based on the speed of this dive. Therefore, in order to easily impress the 'ladies', the males have secretly used a sound trick, to increase the 'score' for their performances.

The key to the trick mentioned above lies in the way they dive! Instead of plunging from the front in front of the female, hummingbirds will dive aside. The purpose of this is to increase the sound level from the dive shot (mainly due to the interaction of the tail and air). This sound is used by females in conjunction with sight to evaluate the speed of the male. And when the sound has been changed with 'tips' , the female will feel the bird flirting with her dive faster than it really is!
