Hanoi was subsidized by a photo of the British diplomat
In the forthcoming photo book "Hanoi", author John Ramsden recorded precious moments of the capital in the 1980s.
John Ramsden was a former deputy ambassador to the United Kingdom in Vietnam in the 1980s. In addition to the work of a diplomat, he also loved photography. To work in Vietnam, the diplomat is not curious, interested in discovering the way of life in Hanoi and some surrounding areas.
Due to the nature of this work, so soon after his term in Vietnam, he set out for other lands. But the photos of Hanoi were kept carefully by him. Years later, when he was retired, John Ramsden ransacked the photos, as a way of remembrance memories of a distant land that was attached to him.
More than one hundred photographs were taken by him on display in places like London, Southeast Asia Art Museum (Bath, England) and Hanoi. Recently, the photos were assembled into a book "Hanoi for a while". The book has 110 photos, 110 landscapes and faces of Hanoi from 1980 to 1982.
The historian Duong Trung Quoc commented that these photos helped Hanoi people to admire their appearance thirty years ago.
Poet Nguyen Quang Thieu assessed: "The book deserves to be considered a precious material for readers to understand more about Hanoi in the years before Doi Moi and the nature of Hanoi forever."
The British Council, the Ancient Far East Institute, and the Vietnam Association of Historical Sciences will hold an exchange with the author to launch the book. The program took place at 9:00 on October 14 at 14 Phan Huy Ich, Hanoi, with the participation of the author, historian Duong Trung Quoc, Professor Andrew Hardy, Doctor of History Vu Thi Minh Huong and journalist.
