Impressive robot cockroach speed

Cockroaches often bring unpleasant feelings to many people as they are capable of spreading disease in many places. But, the anomaly is a great biomimetic model, helping scientists create flexible, high-speed robots.

Scientist Duncan Haldane and colleagues at the University of California, Berkeley (USA) selected cockroaches to study with these advantages.

Their latest creations are VelociRoach , made mostly of cardboard and carrying gauges, the cockroach robot is 10cm long but the speed can reach 2.7m / sec, equivalent to one second it has. Can run as fast as 26 times the body length.

In fact, the cockroach robot is much better than the host that it simulates because the cockroach actually only runs up to 1.5 meters per second.

In order to maintain stability they are equipped with a thin layer of plastic to provide aerodynamics for shock absorption at high speeds. Three pairs of legs are programmed to continuously interlock two pairs of grounders.

One obstacle to overcome is that VelociRoACH works very much like cockroaches that run into obstacles that do not know how to avoid.

Gizmag magazine points out several other exciting things from cockroach robots: weighs only 30g but can carry up to 120g, can carry more sensors and other tiny devices on the person.

The scientist Duncan Haldane is planning to do more powerful roach robots in the future.
