KS VU THANH SANG (An Giang Plant Protection Joint Stock Company):
The cicadas of coffee in Di Linh are not currently identified, however, in terms of morphology and biological behavior, this cicada has the following common characteristics: the larvae coming to the time of the cattle crawled off the ground. Magicicada cicadas (Photo: lsa.umich.ed) at night, they climb up the branches and leaves to prepare for the final molting into an adult. Adult cicadas live only 2-4 weeks. They suck the trunk of the tree to live, causing damage to the coffee tree both on branches and underground. They lay eggs on small branches that deplete or die branches. Larvae suck up roots to slow growth, stunted, yellow leaves withered, fallen fruits, if severely affected, they can die.
Can be prevented by : Cultivation methods: cutting and collecting and destroying small branches that have been laid eggs by cicadas; timely fertilization to restore roots and grow (roots are severely broken due to larvae burrowing underground). Chemical measures: using drugs initially showed very positive results such as: Bian 40EC: mixed with the recommended dose
(40-50cc / 8 liters) spray the entire area of coffee base according to the leaves so that the drug solution penetrates deep into the ground 15-20cm; Diazan 10H: sprinkle 30-50 grams / stem, depending on small and big plants, spread according to foliage.
In order to improve the effectiveness of pesticide treatment, the larvae need to clean up the coffee stover by using Glyphosan circulating herbicide 480DD (avoid spraying on the green part of the plant).
