The Philippines will become the first country in the world to test the rain gauge system using the available mobile communications equipment.

The technology will track the transmissions sent from mobile to cell phone transmitters during rainy days.

More rain reduces the speed of sending signals between the transmitter and the receiver , which explains why during rainy and stormy times it is difficult for us to send and receive text messages.

In other words, the loss of cellular signal is related to precipitation. The more rain, the fewer messages sent and received.

In June, the technology will be tested in the Port of Batangas province, about 110 km south of Manila. Once implemented nationwide, it can help the weather agency identify areas at high risk of storms and floods.

Technological test results will be the basis for researchers in developing a flood warning system in the future.
