Naming stars, needing a global campaign

Japan was assigned a star system discovered by Japanese scientists 19 years ago. This star is 410 light-years from the constellation of the North Star.

Japan National Astronomical Observatory has opened a website to receive registration. Here, people can register names for stars and planets, along with explaining why.

The username must use 4 to 16 Latin characters and has never been reserved for any other celestial body.

Deadline for registration in Japan is September 4. The chosen name will be announced in December after the selection in Japan and approved by the International Astronomical Society.
