New Horizons observes lightning on the surface of Jupiter

NASA's New Horizons probe has captured lightning on Jupiter's surface while observing the turbulent atmosphere and strong volcanic activity on this solar system's largest planet.

New Horizons also photographed the small rings of Jupiter and a massive storm as it passed through the planet before heading to Pluto.

Special photos reveal six lightning bolts at Jupiter's northernmost region and seven lightning bolts in the southernmost region. These lightning bolts are 10 times stronger than on Earth.

NASA has published all of these findings in the journal Science. New Horizons probe was launched by NASA in January 2006 from Cape Carnaveral base (Florida state, USA) and will arrive in Pluto in July 2015.
