Preserving rare civet civet in Vietnam

The Center for Wildlife Research and Conservation, Save Vietnam's Wildlife, launched a campaign to protect the civet, a rare animal in Vietnam.

Nearly 2,000 calendars and posters on the civet have been sent to the Forest Protection Department of 63 provinces, cities and nature conservation agencies in Vietnam, in order to call for the protection of this rare animal.

For the first time, the civet conservation awareness campaign has been implemented in Vietnam and achieved initial success. The campaign aims to ensure that confiscated civets are transferred to rescue centers for conservation purposes, according to the Center's announcement on January 6.

"In the past 12 years, no swarms have been handed over to rescue centers in Vietnam. Most of them are confiscated and will be immediately released into the forest without going through quarantine and surveillance or being sold. liquidated, " said Nguyen Van Thai, director of the Center and hopes the campaign will attract the attention and action of the authorities as well as the community in general.

Owston's civet (Chrotogale owstoni) is one of the rarest civets in Vietnam. According to the World Red Book and Vietnam, the civet is in the list of endangered species to be protected.

They operate mainly on the ground, so they are susceptible to sticky traps, a popular hunting tool. Besides, because owning beautiful and radiant skin can be used as medicinal material, the need for human use of the civet is much higher than that of other civets.

There are currently only 19 civet in the captive environment and are managed by the Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program managed by the Center and Cuc Phuong National Park. The center has successfully implemented the civet conservation program with 66 individual civet civets born from 14 individual civet are rescued and restored to instinct at the center.
