Robot has a tail like a lizard
Scientists at the University of California (U.S.) have created robots that can jump and balance in the air like lizards.
First, scientists conducted a study of how bald lizards jumped in the air even when they slipped. They found that the rhythmic movement of the tail was the secret to helping the lizard be able to balance the air jumps.
'We first discovered that moving lizards chased up and down to keep their balance while rotating their bodies in the air. The chasing movements of the lizard helped us to think of the idea of attaching a tail to the robot , "said Dr Robert J. Full, head of research.
With more tail like a lizard, the robot becomes more flexible.
Based on the lizard's balancing technique, scientists have developed a tail-type robot named Tailbot . The tail allows the robot to move more flexibly in search and rescue operations.
The flexible movement of the robot by the tail will allow it to detect more quickly toxic or radioactive substances in areas where earthquakes or disasters occur, such as catastrophic leakage. at the Fukushima (Japan) power plant in March 2011.
