Russia experimented with destroying asteroids by laser
Scientists use laser devices to shoot asteroid model in a vacuum.
Scientists at Moscow Technical and Technical University (MIPT) collaborate with other experts to test ways to destroy asteroids, to avoid danger to the Earth, Earth Chronicles on March 16 reported. The team used laser devices to shoot asteroid models placed in a vacuum room.
Many experts are studying measures to prevent asteroids from colliding with the Earth.(Image: Outer Places).
Through experiments, the team could also determine how powerful nuclear weapons needed to prevent cosmic objects from colliding with the Earth. For example, if they want to destroy an asteroid about 200 meters wide, they will need nuclear weapons with the power equivalent to three million tons of TNT.
The three laser devices used in the experiment were Iskra-5, Ray and Saturn . Scientists believe that after destroying asteroids, most debris will burn in the atmosphere. The rest will fall to Earth without harming humans.
"Currently there is no threat from asteroids, so researchers still have time to improve the method of destroying dangerous objects. We are also considering the ability to deflect asteroids." , expert Vladimir Yufa at MIPT, co-author of the study, said.
