Science proves: Personality is the key to success, not wisdom

Do you think that intelligence or intelligence will determine how much of the personality, the success or failure of a child?

Success is a phrase that when it comes to people, people always think about diligence and wisdom. But according to James Heckman , the famous American economist, the role of intelligence is not really important.

Why? He has done a research on the difference between income and intelligence (measured by IQ). As a result, intellect only affects about 1% - 2% difference.

So if IQ is not an important factor, what will help you become rich? This is an easy question to answer, because there are many factors - including luck - that make a difference in income. But according to a recent study by Heckman, the most influential thing is personality , but more specifically the virtues : diligence, perseverance and discipline.

To reach this conclusion, Heckman and colleagues studied four datasets, taking into account the factors: IQ, score, personality, and results of a synthetic test.

This is a huge dataset, collected from a few thousand people from the United Kingdom, the United States and the Netherlands, for decades from a young age. Not to mention, the data also tracks both criminal records, health indicators, and the level of satisfaction with life.

Research results show that scores and test results are things that help assess the likelihood of success when growing up more accurately than IQ scores. But isn't IQ and score closely related?

Effort and perseverance are virtues that help you pursue success.

To be clear, Heckman explains that high scores are probably not because you are smarter, but also because of some other qualities: persistence, healthy study habits, and the ability to collaborate with peers. In other words, personality or personality is the determining factor for your score, and they affect success later.

Of course, intelligence is still an indispensable factor. A person with an IQ of less than 70 can hardly do things like a genius with an IQ of 190.

However, Heckman shares the fact that there are many people who cannot find jobs because of the lack of skills that do not appear on the IQ test. They may not know how to behave properly when looking for a job: going late, dressing poorly . Or even when having a job, they don't know how to show effort, and that makes career ruined.

Smart people without good personalities often find it hard to succeed.

John Erick Humphries - co-author of the study, shared that he wants this achievement to help us better understand a concept that is quite vague, that is "each person's ability". Even as IQ tests, we read the results is not necessarily correct, because it seems to be designed to evaluate many problems rather than intellect.

For example, in 2011, a study conducted by Angela Duckworth, a psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania, showed that IQ scores also showed motivation and effort. In particular, hardworking and hardworking children will try to answer more difficult questions than normal children.

However, they both thought it was not easy to teach children the qualities of character training. First of all, we cannot know whether it is a good thing to possess too much virtue. With wisdom, the higher the IQ, the better.

But in terms of personality, we can only keep them at a balanced level. You won't want to be in contact with an outward-looking person so much that you just want to talk without listening, right?
