Scientists invented fire and water resistant paper

Chinese scientists have invented paper capable of withstanding fire and water.

China was recognized as the inventor of paper about 2000 years ago. Today, paper has become a familiar tool to store, spread information, financial transactions, etc. Not stopping there, a research team at Shanghai Institute of Materials (China) still plays. develop a type of paper that according to them is the world's first waterproof and fireproof ability.

This paper is water resistant even if its surface is damaged and stained with tea or coffee. It is also capable of withstanding temperatures up to 200 degrees Celsius, which means it has a certain degree of fire resistance.

This type of paper can also be cleaned with water without loosing what was written on it. This feature promises to provide better materials for long-term archival documents with different external conditions.

There are many ways to make paper difficult to absorb or fire, but this is the only paper that can combine both characteristics, according to Professor Zhu Yingjie, head of the research project.

Zhu Yingjie's group has been developing this material research project since 2008. Currently, they are applying for a patent for the technology and hope to commercialize the new paper three years later. .

The paper made of plant fibers is susceptible to destruction by liquids, so the team corrected this problem with nanoxyapatite nanowires.

Hydroxyapatite is a form of calcium commonly found in bones and teeth. It gives the paper unique abilities as above.

Professor Zhu said: "Traditionally, paper is made of plant fibers so it is easily destroyed by liquid."

The cost of producing this paper is only "a few yuan" higher than a traditional A4 paper, but the cost can be reduced if mass produced.
