Simulate life on Mars
6 project volunteers will live and work in tight conditions and separate from the surrounding world, paving the way for future Mars research missions.

Participating in this project are 6 volunteers, accepting the challenge of living in an isolated domed estate on the northern slope of Mauna Loa, Hawaii, USA.Their tasks last for 4 months, 8 months and a year respectively.(Photo: HI-SEAS)
Architectural architecture of the dome, the residence of 6 volunteers, with the bedrooms adjacent to each other. The whole building has a diameter of 11m, located at a height of 2,000m above sea level. The means to communicate with the outside world are limited.Time to send messages or e-mails may be about 20 minutes slower, simulating limited conditions like the communication from Mars to Earth and vice versa.(Photo: HI-SEAS)
Volunteer groups of three men and three women, selected based on experience and training similar to NASA's astronaut selection process. Each of their bedrooms is provided with beds, cushions, chairs, clothes storage space right under the bed and a 3D printer. In future Mars missions, 3D printers will be one of the astronauts' important items.(Photo: HI-SEAS)
This challenging result will provide important information and experience for practice. For a mission to study the red planet, the duration of a space flight will last 6 months, the life and working time is 500 days, the return time is 6 months.(Photo: HI-SEAS)
The distinct nature of this task may entail some psychological problems. In the same simulation activity that Russia has conducted since 2010-2011, 4 out of 6 volunteers have experienced sleep disorders and reduced productivity throughout the project. In Hi-Seas project, a group of volunteers will perform some scientific work and participate in outside activities while wearing astronaut's suits.(Photo: HI-SEAS)
The US space agency once identified humans as able to set foot on Mars in the 30s of this century and putting people on the red planet is NASA's top priority.(Photo: NASA)
