Spanish money has drugs
A recent study found 94% of the euro circulated in Spain contained cocaine. This is the country with the highest rate of use of this substance in the world.
(Photo: AP, BBC) This study was published in the Spanish newspaper last December 24. Scientists collected 100 banknotes in denominations of 10 euros, 20 euros, 50 euros from the country's five major cities, including Barcelone, Bilbao, Madrid, Valencia and Seville. According to the analysis, each of these bank notes contains about 25.18 micrograms of cocaine.
The euro has only been in this country since January 2002. Scientists do not check the old Spanish money for fear that they will not " tolerate " chemical experiments.
Users often inhale cocaine by curling the money into a tube. However, scientists say it is difficult to determine which bills are directly used to inhale cocaine and which ones are accidentally infected.
Spain has about 1 billion banknotes in circulation. It is estimated that about 142 million cash sheets are directly used to inhale cocaine.
This situation also occurs in some European countries. According to a 1999 survey, 99% of London's 5-sheet sheets had cocaine attached. Meanwhile, 94% of the euro in Germany contained this substance according to a 2003 study.
