The Saluk i little dog comes from Iran, where their ancestors used to live near the first farmers of the fertile Crescent. The dog in this land, so likely has evolved the ability to eat starchy foods from about 12,000 years ago.

'Our studies show that the ancestors of dogs are rarely able to digest starch-rich foods , ' said Erik Axelsson, Uppsala University. ' That indicates that purebred dogs are most likely related to wet rice civilization. It is likely that the ancestors of saluki lived near places where agriculture developed early, such as the fertile Crescent and China. '
