The first commercial space port is about to be completed

Phase 1 of the world's first commercial port project is now 90% complete. This will be the place to provide flights to space for tourists with enough economic potential and want to explore the universe of the Virgin Group.

This spaceport America spaceport is 1,800 acres wide, located in Las Cruces, New Mexico and is the base of Virgin Galactic. Spaceport America is the most ambitious venture project of President Richard Branson ever.

The building has a nearly 2-mile runway, a futuristic receptionist and a domed Operations Center.

A spokesperson for the space port said that only a few months away, the project will be completed, expected later this year - just in time for the first space flights scheduled for 2013.

Christine Anderson, newly appointed executive director of New Mexico Space Port Authority, shared with SPACE.com that she was "excited" about the progress of this project. She said it was a small city in the middle of the desert in New Mexico. Contractors, architects and everyone have spent a lot of time and effort on its development.

However, Ms. Anderson faced many challenges. As soon as she started her new job, New Mexico's legislature cut more than half of its budget for the space agency. It is not yet clear when Spaceport America can begin operations. The best possibility is that flights can start in the first quarter of 2013.

The construction of Phase 2 has begun and is expected to be completed in time for Virgin Galactic's pioneering flights. It includes completing the Vertical Launch Complex, 2 visitor centers in nearby towns and adding a visitor center in the main port space.
