When unveiling a unique image, NASA called it an important milestone in New Horizons' 9-year mission to Pluto.

The gritty black-and-white photo shows Charon in the form of a small bright spot, close but separate from a brighter Pluto.

Charon, 1,200km in diameter, is the largest of Pluto's 5 defined moons. It is located about 19,000 km from the dwarf planet.

It is known that the mission of New Horizons was launched in January 2006, at an estimated cost of 700 million USD.
