The laser 'shoot' the data away
US researchers have demonstrated a laser that can generate high-speed light pulses on silicon to accelerate data transmission.
A team at the University of California, Calif., Uses a layer of indium phosphide on a silicon substrate and causes the material to emit 40 billion light pulses per second. The laser launcher generates short, useful pulses of light for optical applications, including multiple wavelengths, remote sensing and high-precision optical clocks.
"This new discovery is an important step in combining the laser and the optical components into silicon to achieve a method of linking optical-electric functionality to a single chip, creating integrated circuits. new, "said the American Optical Association. "This is a low-cost, low-power, low-power technology."
At present, computer chip technology is mainly based on weak currents to transmit data in semiconductor processors.
