The more the crab snapped, the more crazy birds were sleeping

The crazy bird could not escape the tragic fate after falling into the tougher pair of pincer crabs.

Mark Laidre, a professor at Dartmouth College, USA, and an explorer at the National Geographic Society, said in a study published today in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment that coconut crabs are enemies " Unseen " with birds nesting on the ground, according to National Geographic.

Laidre spent two months going to remote Chagos Islands to study the mysterious coconut crabs. On this journey, Laidre had the opportunity to witness this giant crab's hunting strategy.

In early March 2016, Laidre spotted a coconut crab tugging a red-footed insane bird (scientific name Sula Sula) sleeping on a low tree branch. Stuck with wings, the crazy bird fights in desperation.

Within 20 minutes, 5 other coconut crabs arrived. A sharp sense of smell motivates them to come to the place where the blood smells. The first attacker dragged the crazy bird who was still walking away and the crabs fighting to compete. After a few hours, the crabs tore the bird into many pieces and eaten. Laidre said the hunting scene is quite scary.

According to Laidre, the birds can fly from island to island, but the coconut crabs are stuck on the island they are born. They cannot breathe underwater so they cannot swim to another island.

Laidre observed that on the islands where coconut crabs live there are no birds nesting in the ground. In live bird nesting islands, Laidre does not see the presence of coconut crabs. It seems that small birds with fragile eggs choose to nest in coconut crabs cannot endanger them.

Coconut crab is an unusual species compared to other crustaceans. They can weigh up to 4kg, a meter long, specializing in climbing a coconut picking tree to peel off the pulp. This lonely, light-colored crab looks like an alien creature, but in fact, they live in caves underground in some islands in the Indian Ocean.

The status of the coconut crab population has not been clearly defined. The International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red Book classifies crabs as "not yet available". But scientists believe that the hunt of humans and destroyed living environment is causing the number of coconut crabs to decline.

According to Laidre, coconut crabs can be scary for other animals, but they are afraid of people . "They're not aggressive. They're just curious. They won't appear and jump to attack you. Coconut crabs are more afraid of people , " Laidre said.

The next step in coconut crab research is to install cameras near their habitats so that scientists can observe. No scientist has officially studied coconut crabs, where they pair or look at how they communicate."We will need to gather a lot of information but the coconut crab is very interesting , " Laidre said.
