Phoenix will be launched by a Delta II missile, starting a 200 million km long journey within nine and a half months. The ship will land on the surface of the red planet on May 25, 2008 near an area in the North Pole. This area was selected by the mission team due to the possibility of freezing water under the Martian surface a few centimeters.

The main goal of the mission will be to explore the land to take samples and analyze them to find out if conditions on Mars are favorable for life.
