The Sahara Desert can turn into a giant power plant

A group of meteorologists from the US, China and Italy, led by Eugenia Kalnai, conducted experiments to simulate the Sahara desert climate, the work shows that the area may become fertile . Their research is published in the journal Science.

These measures will be enough to help agriculture grow back in the desert.

In their study, scientists have proposed covering the entire Sahara region (more than 9 million square kilometers) by wind and solar power plants.

Thanks to the implementation of this super project, it is possible to produce four times the energy of all the current human energy consumption.

According to them, after placing the energy facilities in the desert, the rainfall will increase more than twice, which will increase the growth of the trees, and therefore the vegetation cover in the area will increase.

The scientific team notes that large wind power plants will affect wind movement, and also contribute to the mixing of air masses.

And solar panels will reflect the sun's rays and thus cool the surface. In the opinion of the expert group, such measures will be enough to help agriculture grow back in the desert.
