Three-colored crabs invaded the Pig Bay in Cuba
After the first spring rains, millions of crabs find their way from the forest to the sea to breed, creating an amazing natural sight at the Bay of Pigs.
Each year, after the first rains of spring, the crabs migrate from the forests around Con Bo Bay to the sea to spawn.
The "army" invading the Bay of Pig is the three crabs of black, yellow and red colors.
They appear at dawn or at sunset everywhere: on the road, on the wall, on the beach .
"30 to 40 can enter the house at the same time you don't realize it," Edian Villazon, a beachside food vendor, told Reuters.
However, people here do not eat this kind of crab because they believe they are poisonous . "We always have to close the door," Villazon said.
The natural phenomenon makes many people feel excited, but also brings many troubles. The rotten smell of dead crabs is caused by the vehicle rolling over, causing discomfort while crab shells puncture tires.
For locals, the periodic "invasion" of crabs is a good occasion to do business.Tourists are willing to spend 10 USD to fix tires while the average income of people here is only about 25 USD / month.
"Every passing car is punctured , " said Ito Molina, a local resident. "So we just stood there and waited for the tire."
A large crab statue is located in the entrance to the town of Playa Larga , located on the banks of the Bay of Pigs. The region has seen a boom in tourism in recent years, especially after US relations - Cuba eased.
Although the number of crabs killed by rolling cars or being caught by birds is much, the animals still grow strong. "I believe that millions of crabs are killed by cars every year, but next year millions of other children appear , " expert Jorge Luis Jimenez of Cuba's Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment.
Not only in the Bay of Pigs, this phenomenon also occurred in other areas in Cuba as well as some special ecosystems such as Australia's Christmas Island .
