Unmanned cargo ship starts offshore in 2018?
The first unmanned aerial vehicle is expected to begin shipping offshore in 2018, according to an ambitious project of a Norwegian-based company.
Yara Birkeland plans to develop an all-electric freighter , Yara Birkeland . The high-tech ship is expected to help remove 678 tons of carbon dioxide from the air by reducing the number of 40,000 cargo shipments by diesel annually.
Yara Birkeland is expected to sail for the first time in 2018, but was initially subjected to human control. However, by 2020, the ship will be fully operational.

"Every day there are more than 100 diesel trucks to carry freight from Yara's Porsgrunn plant to the ports of Brevik and Larvik before they are delivered to customers around the world. Unmanned, electrically driven, we will move the trucking activity from road to sea, which will help reduce noise and dust emissions and improve the safety of national highways. as well as reducing the emission of toxic gases such as NOx and CO 2, " explains Svein Tore Holsether, president and CEO of Yara.
Yara says it has partnered with Kongsberg Marine Technology to build an "improved ship to protect our planet." Under the agreement, Kongsberg is responsible for developing and supplying all essential technologies for the Yara Birkeland, including sensors and integrated tools for remote automation, electric motors, batteries and propulsion control system.
