Urban birds are more aggressive than rural birds?
Despite more food, compared to rural birds, city birds are more aggressive with their neighbors.
Why are urban birds more aggressive than rural birds?
People living in cities are often disparaged as unfriendly like people living in rural areas, and so do sparrows . According to a new study published by Behavioral Ecology, the sparrows (Meolospiza Melodia scientific name) living in urban areas are more likely to be aggressive to the same species than the birds living in the forest.
While high population densities and work pressures are the main causes of the irritability of urban dwellers, it is quite different in birds because of this situation. The researchers observed the male birds' reactions to the songs of other male birds and noted whether the birds approached or even attacked birds singing. The results showed that the level of aggressiveness of finches does not depend on the density of birds living in the area, but depends on the availability of food.
Surprisingly, birds in food-rich areas (such as cities) are often more aggressive than birds living in less food areas (such as rural areas). In rural areas, sparrows will also become more violent if they are provided with more food than usual.
According to the author of the study, this phenomenon may be due to the fact that finches actively protect more food territories than poor areas. However, this manifestation of birds that have not been made clear is offensive or defensive: Sparrows in the city can often show aggression to their fellow humans to occupy more valuable territories, or probably because they want to protect their territory.
