US tests super-powerful missiles

The most powerful and largest solid propellant ever, the Space Launch System (SLS), is being installed at NASA's ATK Space Center in Brigham City, Utah.

SLS will take NASA's Orion spacecraft and other spacecraft into orbit at the same time allowing humans to explore new areas in the solar system.

Although other similar solid propellants could also help launch the spacecraft into orbit, the SLS five-stage missile was upgraded and improved by ATK and NASA engineers. The cost of new missiles is also less expensive while operating more efficiently than missiles used to shuttle space shuttle.

"Our goal is to provide cheaper, safer and more reliable missiles, " said Alex Priskos, manager of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville.

Utilizing the most advanced technology, NASA hopes the new rocket will be tested in late spring 2013.
