This is the new type of adenovirus . The pathogen was identified in a disease outbreak in the Titi monkeys in California (USA) in 2009. Most of the infected monkeys died.
A scientist exposed to infected monkeys also died. A member of this family is also infected and the experts found no antibodies to the deadly virus.
The team exposed three monkeys to the virus. All three have symptoms like mild cold, have an antibody reaction to infection and heal after 12 days.
The study, published in Plos ONE, shows that the virus can attack and cause disease in many different primates, according to Dr. Charles Chiu, Director of the Center for Virus Diagnosis and Detection. University of California (USA), who led the study.
The study raises concerns about the possibility of this virus being spread from animals to humans.
