Why do we sleep?
We spend about a third of our lives sleeping. Sleeplessness is very important to human health - no one can spend a few days without sleep. And that is probably the least understood of our activities.
There are many hypotheses, but most of our sleep needs are still a mystery. Sleep helps maintain the body, from the production of chemicals to use while waking up to reorganizing neurons in the brain. High-density REM sleep occurs more in the period of brain development.
Some hypotheses have shown that sleep is an important state for the ability to learn and remember. Sleep helps bring fragmentary memories into long-term archives, and can also simply bring a break to daytime activities.
