An American farmer has spent a lot of time and effort to successfully breed a unique, unique, multicolored sweet corn variety.
Carl Barnes, a farmer in Oklahoma (USA), developed the Corn Gem multicolored corn when occasionally observing that corn cobs have unusual colors. He came up with the idea of gathering colorful corn cobs and crossing them together.
A Glass Gem corn can give seeds with dozens of different colors
After years of incubating and pursuing the idea, Mr. Barnes finally found a way to produce corn seeds for seeds with dozens of different colors on the same core. Shortly before his death, he passed on the collection of seeds and how to make the Glass Gem to a trusted friend named Greg Schoen, and asked him to preserve them.
In 2010, Mr. Schoen decided to find a permanent home for a unique collection of corn varieties. He handed the Glass Gem seeds to Bill McDorman, owner of a small seed company in Arizona, USA. Mr. McDorman said he was surprised and delighted when he first saw the Glass Gem corn harvested.
Carl Barnes, the Glass Gem's father, passed on his unique collection of seeds and multicolour corn varieties before he died.
Mr. McDorman is also a leader of Native Seeds / SEARCH, which works to preserve the agricultural heritage of Native Americans. The organization is selling Glass Gem seeds on their website.
According to the instructions for use, the Glass Gem corn can be used to make corn flour or popcorn, but not suitable for boiling directly.
