Baldwin - The steepest street on the planet
Located in Dunedin, South New Zealand, Baldwin Street is known as the world's steepest street.
Baldwin Street is located in a suburban neighborhood, running from the Lindsay Creek valley eastward onto Signal Hill toward Opoho.
The street has a total length of 350m. Under the "street foot" , the road is only gentle, however, the higher the slope, the steeper the slope of up to 19 degrees. In other words, at this section, each time about 2.86m, the road is 1m higher.
The street has a total length of 350m.
Baldwin Street was so steep that people had to build roads with concrete materials instead of asphalt due to concerns that hot asphalt days could flow down the street.
The unusual slope of the street is thought to be the result of a poor planning policy . Policy makers from London, though not well-versed in city terrain, have come up with plans to build networked streets without considering the typical terrain. This results in some streets lying on steep hills.
The unusual slope of the street is thought to be the result of a poor planning policy.
Immediately after finding the problem, instead of reviewing the design and making new plans, or at least combining with the sharp turning lines and very steep sections to limit the slope, the regulators "close your eyes" plan to follow the old plan. There are even steep streets that cannot be constructed and have been abandoned.
Today, Baldwin becomes the pride of the city people when it attracts many tourists to visit. Every year, every summer, the local government organizes a number of charitable programs and special street races that attract a large number of participants.
