Cameras across the veil

Japan's NHK has created a ' wave camera' capable of shooting through smoke, fog, even curtain. The waves emanating from the machine go through smoke-defying components and also be able to see a shadow behind a curtain or a silhouette of a person standing behind a screen.

The camera uses special electromagnetic waves of the 60GHz band. In the test, when moving the antenna from left to right and vice versa in about 40 seconds, the machine can detect the silhouette of a person behind a curtain. NHK's goal is to develop a camera that captures an image in 1.35 seconds to capture moving objects.

NHK is expected to use the camera at accident or fire scenes. In the next 4 or 5 years, the system could also help former detainees search the victims or make cameramen for cameramen in fires.
