This animal is an amphidromous , fish often move between freshwater and saltwater for part of their life cycle, but not necessarily for reproduction.

They can travel more than 100km in their cyclical journey.

Purple eel fish can grow up to 30cm in length, their food is a mixture of crustaceans, small fish and small animals.

It is mainly found in coastal waters and estuaries in the islands of East Africa, India and Australia, but has also been found in Japan, Bangladesh, New Guinea and New Caledonia.
