Climate change due to 10 million-year greenhouse effect on Mars

Greenhouse gas builds up in the atmosphere, causing Mars temperature to rise, making a long warm period appear, with a period of up to 10 million years.

The study, published in the journal Earth and Planetary Science Letters of the University of Pennsylvania, said that climate change may have taken place in a very long time on Mars , Business Insider on 11/12 reported. .

Greenhouse gas accumulation is the cause of the weather cycle on the Red planet, resulting in prolonged warm periods, up to 10 million years. It also creates enough water for rivers to run down the ground.

Greenhouse gases can accumulate in the atmosphere from volcanic eruptions, lava cooling on the surface or escaping from the planetary shell. Rain often removes some gases, but early Martian stars were very cold and less rainy, so the process could not be maintained.

"Because of the cold environment, Mars does not absorb all the carbon into the planet's surface. Instead, they accumulate in the atmosphere, causing a greenhouse effect that causes planetary temperatures to rise." Batalha, a graduate student in astronomy and astrophysics at the University of Pennsylvania, said.

The scientists' task now is to show the amount of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and hydrogen (H 2 ) generated on Mars. They will have to look for signs of carbonate rock depositing deep in the planet's surface to solve this problem. Carbonate rock is produced from acid rain, which occurs because of the large amount of CO 2 accumulating in the atmosphere.

"We can detect many different types of carbonates if we dig deeper into the surface of the Red Planet in the next exploration , " said Jim Kasting, a professor of geology at Pennsylvania State University, a co-author. , to speak.
