Clothes made from spider silk

This material will be extremely durable, tough and light and can become a future for outdoor clothing line if the cooperation between famous sports fashion brand Patagonia and a startup project in California goes right direction.

The good news for fashion enthusiasts and also bad news for those who are afraid of spiders is that we are getting closer to creating costumes made of spider silk.

In early May, the Bolt Threads start-up project of the Bay Area announced a new partnership with Patagonia to develop costumes inspired by its exclusive spider silk yarns and fabrics. Bolt Threads has been financed up to $ 50 million (about 1.11 trillion VND) from investors. This combination hopes that the latest efforts to exploit the ability of spider silk will succeed beyond expectations.

Silk spider is five times stronger than steel and tougher than Kevlar synthetic fiber up to three times.

Matt Powell, NPD Group's outdoor industry analyst, said: "When a big brand like Patagonia joins and is committed to this project, I think it signals people are really realizing it. Great improvement from this technology ".

For decades, scientists, entrepreneurs and large businesses have tried to recreate spider silk because it has been greatly praised for its superior quality.Silk spider is five times stronger than steel and tougher than Kevlar synthetic fiber up to three times. Until now, no one has been successful on a commercial scale, however Bolt Threads is one of the few companies around the world that continues to race to accomplish that.

Bolt Threads created a large amount of spider silk protein then turned these crude proteins into fibers. Since its founding in 2009, the company has evolved from a concept to reality and this summer will turn to yarn production.

Patagonia-branded products are expected to be launched in 2018.

Sue Levin, Marketing Manager of Bolt Threads shared: "We are expanding our scale and will produce tons of materials in the next few months."

It is currently unclear what exactly Patagonia will do with the Silk Threads special material. Both companies declined to comment on the specifics of the deal. However, Levin said the Patagonia-branded product is expected to be launched in 2018.

However, that does not exclude the possibility that some Bolt Threads will be released sooner. Earlier, the company said it was likely to bring a new product to market this year and the company's website had an introduction: "Stay tuned. We are planning to change your outfit. in 2016 ".

Levin added: "We really do not want to discuss the progress or answer the question that our product will be available next month or next year. What we are trying to do doing is creating textile materials for the future for centuries. "

Brands are very interested in new technologies that are more sustainable than the old ones.

In the future, sustainable development is the main selling factor of Bolt Threads: sugar, water, yeast and salt are the basic foundation of this company's fiber products. This makes Bolt Threads fit naturally with an eco-fashion brand like Patagonia.

Powell said: "Brands are more interested in sustainable new technologies than older ones. I think in the next few years, there will be more and more similar technologies with high applicability. human life ".
