Compose music from sleep
A group of computer scientists at the University of Helsinki, Finland, has successfully developed software that can automatically compose music from a person's sleep measurement data. The software uses data collected from an internet-connected sensor - Beddit placed under participants' mattresses to record the stages of their sleep, body movements, heart rate and breathing.
Once this data is fully collected and uploaded to the Sleep Musicalization website, the software will calculate the data and automatically compose the synthesized music. The harmonies created only relate to music, but bring a new perspective to the relatively new sleep that we have all experienced.
Hannu Toivonen, professor of Computer Science, University of Helsinki explains: 'We are developing a novel way of illustrating real-world data or experiences. Music can totally arouse emotions to describe the characteristics of data. Sleep analysis is our first application '.
Subscribers using the Beddit service can access Sleep Musicalization, enter the details needed to listen to great music translations from their sleep. Those who do not subscribe to the service can also listen to the compositions of participants.
Researchers are planning to introduce their work at the International Smart Data Symposium, which will take place in October.
