Create pure environment to feed stem cells

US scientists have successfully prepared a pure environment for stem cell culture and have used this medium to create two new human embryonic stem cell lines.

This is an important step in the field of stem cell research because the environment will make stem cells grow without the use of animal products. Tenneille Ludwig, head of research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said: "This success helps us overcome some of the major barriers to the use of human stem cells to treat diseases .

Successful breeding of living cells outside the body often requires a mixture of nutrients, hormones, growth agents and serum. In the case of human embryonic stem cells, animal cells are required to maintain and make cells grow in the implant.

Animal products may contain viruses and other agents. Many scientists fear that viruses from animals and other agents can infect stem cells in culture media, then infect patients if these cells are used to treat the disease.

Not only that, the research team created two stem cell lines in a culture environment with absolutely no animal products. Two lines have lived for more than 7 months. However, a cell line has an abnormal chromosome in the fourth month and the second line has abnormal chromosomes in the seventh month.
