Detects micro plastic particles in a range of bottled water products

Recent tests have found that most of the products of many world-famous brands contain tiny, well-known plastic particles.

Specifically, media agency Orb Media purchased 250 bottles of water from 9 different countries, including Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, Thailand and the United States. Water bottles belong to many brands, including Aqua, Aquafina, Dasani, Evian, Nestle Pure Life and San Pellegrino.

Then all the water bottles are checked for quality at New York University Fredonia, through a special technology. This technology allows the detection of tiny blue plastic particles in bottled water products after putting Red Nile dye into water samples.

The results showed that more than 93% of water samples contain plastic molecular particles such as polypropylene, nylon, or PET (polyethylene terephthalate) plastic . These are the most commonly used plastics in bottle caps. The study also found that 65% of these tiny plastic beads are in small pieces, not plastic fibers.

Researcher Sherri Mason, a professor of chemistry at the school, told BBC News: "We found plastic crystals in all water bottles, belonging to all brands. Does this mean we don't? It also shows that plastic has become a very popular material and can be mixed into drinking water or any other product. "

There is currently no evidence that swallowing these plastic crystals can be harmful. Mason advised that people living in developing countries, where tap water is likely to be contaminated, should continue to use bottled water.

However, Mason said it was impossible to rule out the link between the introduction of these crystals and the increase in some types of cancer, as well as the quality and quantity of sperm in men. or autism.
