After the collapse of the Syailendra Buddhist dynasty, Borobudur was abandoned and forgotten for 10 centuries.
The work was sent to rediscover by a delegation of European scientists from the Dutch colonial government in Indonesia.
At that time Borobudur was much ruined and lay under a luxuriant vegetation.
It is believed that the temple tower was buried after the massive eruption of the volcano Merapi in this region in the 14th century.
This may be a blessing, when the ash has covered Borobudur, helping to limit the destruction of time and people.
Later, the colonial government gave Borobudur excavations to the locals, and the magnificence of the work when revealed was astonishing to all witnesses.
