Discovered new birds in Indonesia

Zoologists from the Indonesian University (UI) have discovered a new species of bird in the Togian archipelago in North Sumatra province. They named the new bird Kacamata Togian or white-eyed Togian, scientific name Zosterops somadikartai .

In collaboration with American professor Pamela Rasmussen, an expert on Asian birds, the description of this bird is complete.

This is a small bird, greenish-green, red-eyed and has no white-eyed edges like relatives in other parts of Indonesia, very fast and often moves in small groups.

Indonesian researchers said they had been observing the white-eyed Togian bird for six years, from 1997 to 2003, but soon after it was discovered, the bird was included in the list of animals. objects are at risk of extinction because of limited numbers and only live in the islands of Malenge, Batudaka and Togian, belonging to the Togian Islands.

Indonesia currently has 1,599 species of birds, including the white-eyed Togian. According to scientists, there are about 10,000 bird species worldwide.
