A mountain bike racer in Cheeseboro gorge, California, USA, happened to encounter a pair of Pacific rattlesnakes (Crotalus oreganus) pitted and stopped recording, Earth Touch News on August 28 reported. Video battle shared by Santa Monica Mountains national park on social networks and attracted more than 25,000 views.

At this time of year, the encounter with the male Pacific ring serpent entangled in a battle for the right to mate with females was not rare."The purpose of such matches is not to kill or to hurt the opponent but to establish a position," explained wildlife biologist David Steen.

Many people misunderstand that this is mating behavior or dance. However, in battle, they often reach their heads and bodies more to try to prove to a nearby female that she is stronger.
