The red-water puddle has Moon light shining at São Domingos mine in Achada do Gamo, one of the areas inside the Dark Sky Alqueva Reserve in Mértola, Portugal.

The abandoned São Domingos mine lies in the belt of Pyrit Iberian and was once a source of base metals and other elements such as sulfur.

Iron and other chemicals in the mine seep into rainwater, creating acidic lakes, or red as in the image above.

The mining operation in São Domingos dates back to ancient Rome. During the modern mining phase, between 1850 and 1960, more than 20 million tons of materials were removed from the mine, according to the Serrão Martins Foundation (in Portugal), a mine-protected nonprofit organization said. .
