eCorner - farewell to internal combustion engine
Siemens's eCorner project is going to completely change the face of the car in the future. It eliminates hydraulic suspension, brakes, controls the wheels and even current internal combustion engines.
In the future, car manufacturers will face a shortage of fuel and therefore, finding an alternative to today's internal combustion engine is a long-term solution.Siemens is expected to replace the traditional operating structure with electric motors installed at each wheel, directly impacting each wheel. Not using gasoline or diesel engines also helps car firms meet the strictest emission standards.

Even though people are still investing to fully exploit the potential of internal combustion engines, it is inevitable to aim for cleaner, more fuel-efficient vehicles."Hybrid engines are a stepping stone to other solutions in the future. In our opinion, in the long term, electric motors can meet even the most stringent emission laws , " said Dr Klaus Egger, Vice President. Siemens VDO Automotive president, said.
eCorner is an electronic vehicle control system (Drive-by-Wire), that is, not through the current mechanical structures. With this system, each wheel will be an independent motor cluster, where the motor can directly act on each wheel. Each tire contains a sensor (Tire Guard) to adjust the pressure of the tire. The suspension will be much different from today's design.Currently, to ensure a comfortable journey for passengers, cars feature complex mechanical suspension with hydraulic components. But electronic circuits will play an increasingly important role in the coming years.
1. The car rim is still designed in the old style.
2. Under the rim of the vehicle is the operating motor system.
3. EWB brake system.
4 and 5. New style wheel navigation suspension. Also, in the eCorner system, each wheel can move in a separate angle. Finally, the EWB (Electronic Wedge Brake) electronic brake system allows independent deceleration in each wheel with almost absolute accuracy, the braking force is large enough to meet the requirements of any emergency situation. Come on.
The transfer from internal combustion engine to eCorner also brings energy efficiency. In theory, under optimal conditions, a hybrid system takes advantage of nearly 85% of the available energy, gasoline and diesel engines only account for approximately 50%.Meanwhile, 96% of the energy is expected to be used by Siemens electric motors.
The use of eCorner will enable designers to paint completely new car shapes by eliminating a lot of space for previous engines and powertrains. The help system through eCorner gives drivers a whole new set of capabilities.Vehicles can enter parking spaces almost horizontally using wheels that can rotate around the shaft. Finally, the cost of warranty service will be less expensive when removing many components, especially hydraulic systems.
Before we can complete eCorner, Siemens believes that mass production of EWB (Electronic Wedge Brake) electronic brake system is an important stepping stone. It is expected that by the end of this decade, the first vehicle equipped with EWB will prove the advantages of a fully controlled electric braking system. It will initiate the integration of other components right into the wheel.
