Encountered a strange squid that looks like an alien creature

A giant spinner squid, also known as the Magnapinna squid and believed to be the deepest-living squid in the ocean , has been filmed by the Minderoo-UWA Deep Sea Research Centre and Inkfish using video cameras in the second deepest trench in the world.

The video shows a squid with very long tentacles approaching a camera with a bait fish attached and quickly swimming away from the area.

The video was recorded during the Tonga Trench Expedition 2024, which uses submersibles to study the world's second deepest trench , after the Mariana Trench.

The giant squid is characterized by its slender tentacles, which can grow up to 8m long. Its pinkish-red, almost transparent body and deep purple eyes make this creature look like it comes from another planet.

This is the first known species of squid in the deepest part of the ocean, living 6,000m below sea level.

The research community has only encountered the creature about 20 times during ocean research trips over the past two decades, so the life cycle of the giant squid remains a mystery to oceanography.
