Every night, many mosquito-eating bats?
Master Vu Dinh Thong - bat expert of the Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology) - said there is a little known fact that ' bats have an essential role in nature. , in the ecological environment '.
According to him, so far there have been more than 100 species of bats discovered in Vietnam (accounting for about 10% of the total number of bat species known worldwide). The results of some scientific studies show that every night, every bat can eat a mass of mosquitoes with about half of their body weight.Every night, a medium-sized bat can eat about 5,000 mosquitoes . Thus, millions of night-active bats can eat billions of insects harmful to humans.
Particularly in Cat Ba National Park area (Hai Phong), up to now, 22 species of bats have been discovered. Among these are bats that are considered globally threatened, namely: small nose-nosed bats ( Hipposideros turpis ) which are very popular in Cat Ba but extremely rare in any place. any other in the world. In addition, the field survey results also recorded species with very small to medium size. But most notable is that the bat of the Pipistrellus genus has a different character than all the known bat species in Vietnam. That's not to mention some bat species have very impressive morphological characteristics such as horseshoe bat ( Rhinolophus ), Indian dog bat ( Cynopterus sphinx ) .
