Face tracking machine to detect liar

British scientists fabricate a device that can detect lying behavior by tracking the speaker's face.

BBC reports that Bradford University, Aberystwyth University and the UK Border Agency have worked together to study the lie detection camera system . Their sample is displayed at the British Science Festival in Bradford.

The system consists of a camera, a high resolution thermal image sensor and several algorithms.

Human emotions are expressed through movement of eyes, pupils, lips, nose. Breathing, swallowing and blinking also help us to judge others' emotions. Of course, the camera can record all movements that people see.

Even swelling of the blood vessels around the eyes can also accuse liar. The heat sensor can detect that change.

The research team just tested the lie detector with volunteers, not testing it in real-life situations. They intend to deploy it at a British airport later this year. It is possible that initially the machine will be located near experienced immigration officers when they interview the passenger. As a result, one can compare the machine's judgment with the conclusion of the immigration officer.

'In real and stressful situations, perhaps the success rate of the system will increase. One day, we will be able to detect 90% of the liar, "said Professor Hassan Ugail, a researcher at the University of Bradford.

However, the team acknowledged their system could not detect the liar with a 100% accuracy rate. For example, fear is a sign of untruthful behavior. But when a passenger is frightened, it is most likely that he is afraid the immigration officer will not believe his testimony, not because he is lying.
