Film coated food is made from milk

American researchers have developed dairy-coated films that not only help preserve food but also eat it.

Tomasula Peggy, associate professor of agriculture at the US Department of Agriculture, invented an environmentally-friendly food-borne film of milk protein .

New coatings have the ability to prevent oxygen from entering the food 500 times better than the same product made from plastic. With dairy origin, this film is biodegradable and completely edible.

"Protein-encapsulated packaging will prevent spoilage, helping to reduce food wastage in the transportation of food," Tomasula said at a conference of the American Chemical Society, 8.

Some types of membranes are available on the market but are mainly made from starch. Starch-based films have more holes, which allow air to easily penetrate tiny holes into the food. The coating of milk has a smaller cavity, which makes the net more compact than the outside air compartment.

The disadvantage of the new coating is that it is relatively difficult to use and dissolves in water too quickly. Researchers have improved the product by adding pectin from grapefruit to help the film become more durable as well as better moisture and temperature resistance.

"This product has a multitude of applications." We are testing it as a disposable food- wrapper, " said Laetitia Bonnaillie, co-author of the study.
