Found the Balkan feral cat that seemed to be extinct

A kitten of a wild cat in danger of extinction has just been discovered in the wild after 10 years of silence.

When discovered, the cat is living in a cave in a deserted area in the Macedonian region. The re-emergence of this "little tiger" shines with a glimmer of hope that, although only about 50 individuals remain, the Balkan lynx is still alive in the Balkan Peninsula.

This breed is a subspecies of Eurasian cats . Although there are good living conditions, but the number of individuals of Balkan bobbins is severely reduced and is close to extinction. Even in 2015, the breed was included in the IUCN Red List of Endangered Animals. Currently, they can only be found on the border area between Albania and Macedonia.

Although Balkan breed conservation plans have been put into operation, the information on whether this cat is breeding is not yet responded by Macedonian authorities.

For the above reasons, the range of shooting kittens living in caves is extremely valuable. While a few years ago, scientists had the news that a baby fox was stoned to death by a shepherd in Albania; The above pictures are evidence that the Balkan species is being bred on the other side of the border but still in Mavrovo National Park. This is a glimmer of hope that cats here can be successfully breeded.

Although there are many reasons that constitute the decline of the population of the lynx genus, hunters and the habitat reduction due to human devastation are still the two main factors. One of the biggest goals of the Balkan breed conservation program is to restore the cat's food source.

Only 25% of the kittens can survive to adulthood, and how to ensure a sufficient number of deer and rabbits for the other large 'tigers' is a vital issue.

'The success of the whole project is mainly due to the level of goodwill and cooperation between the Macedonian Ecological Association (MES) with local people and stakeholders; mainly hunters, loggers and livestock breeders, 'said Mime's Dime Melovski: 'Some hunters also support follow-up activities and are very enthusiastic to help us acquire Necessary scientific data '.

Although the food source of the Balkan cat is restored, the most notable cause is the lack of their habitat.

"Countries in the Balkan region need to join hands to create a large living space to protect the cat, because only one country is not enough space for them to live ," Melovski said.

The appearance of a kitten does not tell the existence of the whole species, but it is certainly a hope for the future of the Balkan lynx.
