Giant centipedes swim as fast as eels and 4 newly discovered 'monsters' in 2016
2016 is said to be a "bumper" year for biologists because they have discovered more than 10,000 new species of creatures. Are you curious about which creatures are they?
Let's review some of the most representative species selected by the Institute of Environmental and Forestry Science (ESF).
1. Giant centipede knows how to swim underwater
This scary, multi-legged species was discovered by chance in Thailand. After research, the experts were surprised by the novel behavior of this centipede.
Specifically, they have moved on land and water and swim as fast as eels. Besides, they have quite bulky bodies with long, dark green legs.
They named this amphibian centipede Scolopendra cataracta - meaning "waterfall" in Latin.
2. Tiny animals Iuiuniscus iuiuensis
This Iuiuniscus iuiuensis multi-legged crustacean is found in a cave in Brazil. A special feature of this species is that they are blind and unable to absorb the pigment.
Iuiuniscus iuiuensis can be lurked in mud, peeling quickly without letting the enemy detect it.
3. Fish species Lasiognathus dinema
The genus of a set of squidfish with the scientific name Thaumatichthyidae, found in dark streams in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This fish has a body length of only about 5 - 10cm, living below a depth of 1,000 - 1,500m.
Lasiognathus squid dinema has wide mouth and many spiky spikes. On top of developing a fishing rod containing bioluminescent bacteria, it is also an effective trap that helps it attract prey.
4. Sea dragon fish Phyllopteryx dewysea
Located in the family of lime fish and seahorses, this creature often resides on the west coast of Australia.Phyllopteryx Dewysea sea dragonfish is about 24cm long, the body is bright red with pink stripes.
They live at a depth of about 51m below sea level. Because the information collected is quite small, experts are still trying to learn about this particular species.
5. Beetle Phytotelmatrichis osopaddington
The beetle Phytotelmatrichis osopaddington (belonging to the Ptiliidae family) is found in puddles in the leafy or leafy pockets of Peru. This type of bug is from 1,03 - 1,06 mm.
Because of its super-small size, experts often jokingly say that a row of 25 new animals must be filled to a length of 2.5cm on the scale.
