Glass paint solution for the hot roof

Builders use white-painted roofing to cool the building during hot sunny days, but a new technology from glass can provide long-term protection.

According to National Geographic, a group of American scientists have created glass paint that can push the sun off the iron roof. In addition, thanks to inorganic components including silica and silicon rubber, the new paint also has the advantage of not degrading under the effects of ultraviolet rays and has a longer life expectancy than conventional polymer coatings.

" Using this paint is like painting a rock on a metal roofing sheet. It will not last only a dozen or so years, " says Jason Benkoski, a scientist at the Department of Physics. a researcher at Johns Hopkins University, said the results of a study at a conference in Boston on Wednesday.

Luster g is the solution being used increasingly popular on the roof. The United States estimated that white paint can reduce the roof's temperature by as much as 10 degrees compared to dark paint, similarly wearing light clothing that helps keep the body cooler on sunny days.

However, according to Benkoski, despite reflecting about 90% of the sun, white sheeted roofs are easily degraded. Due to the polymer origin, white paint can not avoid absorbing ultraviolet (UV) rays such as glass. After three years of exposure to UV light, the paint can absorb up to twice as much sunlight as it did at the time of painting. By contrast, thanks to the ability to reflect sunlight well and the effect of cooling the metal surface, glass paint will help the corrugated iron slow down.

Under the auspices of the Naval Research Service, Benkoski will begin testing new paint over the next two years and bring it to market after five years. Benkoski hopes to use glass paint on many other surfaces, such as glass, cement and stone.
