Goldfish survive more than 4 months without eating

Two goldfish have become the smallest and most supple creatures when they have eaten nothing for more than 4 months, since the February earthquake in New Zealand.

Two goldfish named Shaggy and Daphne spent four and a half months, equivalent to 134 days, trapped in a tank without anyone feeding, even without electricity to run the tank filtration system. They were just discovered and rescued in ruins in Christchurch after the magnitude 6.3 earthquake. Fortunately, they can absorb some nutrients by eating algae on rocks and the walls of the tank.

According to Telegraph, the fish tank owned by Quantum Chartered Accountants. Vicky Thornley, the company's director, said when the earthquake struck in February, she left the aquarium in the building and ran out of it when the sand bricks fell. The earthquake killed 181 New Zealanders.

Until July 6, the authorities allowed Thornley to return to the building to get his belongings. Thornley had no intention of finding the tank because he was convinced the fish had died long ago. However, a worker in the building discovered the aquarium and reported that they were still alive. The yellow color of the two fish is slightly tarnished but they are still very healthy.

"It is unimaginable. I did not expect fish to survive more than 4 months," said Paul Clarkson, manager at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Institute in California, USA. "Gold fish are supple creatures." He said the naturally-occurring bacteria can help clean water enough to sustain these fish.

These two fish are currently on display at the reception area of Quantum Chartered Accountants, Christchurch, New Zealand.
